Rishi Sunak must listen to councils to defeat social immobility

Over the past several months the focus has perhaps understandably been on how hard our NHS is working and the difficulties confronted by our schools in keeping education on track for millions of children and young people. But in reality local authorities have also been at the sharp end of responding to the coronavirus pandemic on many different levels.

They have fronted up an immense public health effort, keeping the day to day services going that we all rely on, like rubbish collection, or working out how to have libraries continue lending books to elderly people stuck at home and not on the internet, perhaps on their own. But beyond that very practical support, local authorities have often provided the reassurance and sense of community at a local level that has lessened the challenge of a period of time like no other in our country.
