Greater collaboration between businesses, government, the education sector and communities is needed to open up the legal sector to more people from different socio economic backgrounds.

That is the conclusion of a new report into social mobility in the legal sector. The report is a partnership between global law firm DLA Piper and the national Social Mobility Pledge and was launched this week at DLA Piper‘s office in London.

The report, entitled Levelling Up Law, sets out the steps DLA Piper is taking to address the challenge that talent is spread evenly but opportunity isn’t. It outlines the barriers within the legal sector that prevent some from considering it as a possible career and how DLA Piper is breaking those barriers down.

Social Mobility Pledge founder, Rt Hon Justine Greening, said:

“The Social Mobility Pledge is all about working with businesses to level up Britain and spread opportunity more evenly, and DLA Piper is absolutely at the forefront of that. It was clear to me when I visited that social mobility is hard-wired into the business throughout and we see examples of that in the team’s work in communities as well as abroad, through the Global Scholarships Programme. DLA Piper is a shining example to others in the legal sector and beyond.

“It was great to launch this report with DLA Piper. I hope it will start a conversation in the legal sector and more broadly about what we can all do to improve social mobility and level up Britain.”

In his foreword, Simon Levine–Global Co-CEO at DLA Piper–says: “We’re a stronger profession if our people come from a wide range of backgrounds. If difference is embraced, valued, and helps define the role of lawyers in our society. Through the combined perspectives and experiences of a diverse population, the profession can continue to play a fundamental part in addressing the most important and challenging issues facing our world.”
