Ministers love to launch new projects - but my 2017 education policy can still save the class of 2020

The last few months has seen a growing and necessary focus on how Covid-19 has levelled down children’s education in our schools. Its impact is devastating for those who are the least privileged and furthest away from a level playing field on opportunity. As the Education Policy Institute report last week underlined, the gaps were already getting wider even before coronavirus. But the reality is clear that it has now made them significantly worse.

Now it’s time to move beyond the problems to finding solutions. We’re not starting from scratch because there are solutions already up and running and making a difference on the ground.
