2019 gets off to a speedy start

At the Social Mobility Pledge, we’re gearing up for an exciting 2019.

The year has already got off to a speedy start with world-class luxury car maker Aston Martin joining the Pledge and committing to help make Britain a fairer country and spreading opportunity more widely.

Hot on their heels were engineering giant Rolls-Royce and Greene King, a leading pub retailer and brewer, which employs 39,000 people across the UK.

And a big welcome to our other January signups, including Wessex Water,  Morgan Sindall GroupMarston’sand Galliford Try

All of the businesses that have signed up to the Pledge are helping to spread opportunity more fairly throughout Britain, by working with local schools, offering apprenticeships and adopting fair recruitment policies, such as name blind recruitment or contextual recruitment.

Businesses are key to levelling up Britain and making sure that talent is what determines how far you can progress and not background or where you were born.

As Paul Broadhead, Global Head of Community Investment & Education Outreach at Rolls Royce, tweeted:

Committing to the @thesmpledge makes perfect sense - widening the talent pool by recognising that whilst talent is evenly distributed opportunity is not. So we need to do something about it! #RollsRoyceSTEM https://t.co/rVN7Hcc6MA

We couldn’t have put it better!

Our mission to change Britain for the better. If you would like to help us, then please sign the Social Mobility Pledge, here.

This year we have plans to go even further and uncover some of the key issues behind the lack of social mobility in Britain. Crucially, we are working with businesses and policy makers, sector by sector, to put forward solutions that can truly transform social mobility.

If there are barriers to social mobility in your sector, we want to hear from you. Or maybe there are policies at your workplace that are really helping to spread opportunity more widely.
